With reshoots planned and more rumors circulating around it, a new report notes that the Michael Jackson biopic is most likely set to be a two-part film series.
According to a new report from THR, Lionsgate and Universal are still figuring out what to do, but the Jackson estate and producer Graham King are looking to split the movie into two parts. The report notes that the “most likely” outcome for the film is to be split into two, as production prepares for an additional 22 days of filming next month.
New details regarding the upcoming movie have also been revealed, with THR reporting just what the plan is for the upcomng bulk of filming.
What are the new details for the Michael Jackson biopic?
THR’s report goes on to mention that planned filming days next month are not being considered “reshoots” so much as they will be used to expand the first half of the film into its own feature.
The idea, according to the report, is for the first film to end with Jackson leaving the Jackson 5 following the release of his iconic first album, Off the Wall. It’s unclear how much or little has already been filmed for all of this, however.
The report comes following the film officially being delayed into 2026 earlier this month. The status of the film, however, has been under scrutiny for some time. Earlier this year, reports of the reshoots first surfaced, with The InSneider’s Jeff Sneider describing the film as “an absolute dumpster fire” that went through multiple changes throughout its development.
The film also came under scrutiny over various legal issues. In January, a report from Puck noted that Jackson’s estate agreed to never include the Chandler family — who accused Jackson of sexually abusing their 13-year-old son in 1993 — in any movie or project about the star.
The estate reportedly overlooked this detail, and had the Chandler family prominently featured in the back half of the movie. THR’s new report notes that, with the film now likely being split into two parts, this gives director Antoine Fuqua more time to fix the issues.
