Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Theatrical Rerelease Dates Set for 1990 Movie

Long before superhero movies and comic book adaptations were commonplace, four brothers took on Hollywood. They’ve returned to the silver screen in live action and animation many times since then, yet their first effort is still fondly remembered. Now, the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie is returning to theaters through Fathom Events in honor of its 35th anniversary.

Produced by New Line Cinema in 1990, the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie was an instant classic. Directed by legendary film and music director Steve Barron, the movie also featured costumes designed by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. This brought Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo to life through a unique combination of animatronics and modeled clay suits.

“Few titles in recent memory have as large and rabid a fanbase as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” noted Fathom Entertainment CEO Ray Nutt. “It’s Turtle Time’ and Fathom Entertainment is proud to be part of Turtlemania and help make possible a 35th anniversary celebration like no other on the big screen. Moviegoers across generations will revel in the action and excitement.”

The trailer for the 35th anniversary rerelease may be viewed below.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will rerelease in theaters on Sunday, August 17, and Wednesday, August 20th. However, this 35th anniversary event has more to offer TMNT fans than a chance to see the classic movie on a big screen. A special featurette detailing the making of the movie will also be included in the screenings.

The featurette, Turtles Unmasked, was produced in collaboration with the creators of TMNT: Evolution, Mutation & Reboot. It will feature never-before-seen footage from the archives, extended scenes left on the cutting room floor, and home-recorded behind-the-scenes footage. This includes footage from Barron’s video diary as he reflects on the challenges of bringing the Ninja Turtles to life.
