One character from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story returning for Andor Season 2 is K-2SO. Played by Alan Tudyk, K-2SO is a reprogrammed Imperial security droid who serves Cassian Andor and the Rebellion.
K-2SO will eventually play an integral role in Cassian’s story as a co-pilot. However, the droid did not appear in Andor Season 1 and the first half of Season 2.
Why has K-2SO not shown up in Andor yet?
The decision to sideline K-2SO for most of Andor came directly from creator Tony Gilroy. Cost economics aside, Gilroy explained that the story drove K-2SO’s lack of involvement in the Star Wars prequel show.
“[Limiting K-2SO] K-2SO came from the experience of making Rogue, to be honest with you. From the very beginning, that was one of the most difficult parts of the original conversation — how long I was going to have to delay [K-2SO]? Because what can you do with him?” Gilroy told the Hollywood Reporter. “I don’t want people to go back and diagram Rogue, but just within that movie, there are two or three or four places where we are hiding him, where he has to stay on the ship or can’t go somewhere.
“He’s a really, really difficult piece of equipment to carry through a story. The limitations on him are huge. He’s a very visible, troublesome piece of story gear. So I knew intuitively how long I would have to wait to do it.”
K-2SO is billed for Andor Season 2 and will show up in the second half. Despite the character’s absence, Gilroy admires K-2SO and Tudyk’s performance.
“[K-2SO] is fantastic, and he’s funny. Tudyk is hysterical, and it’s really great,” Gilroy added. “We were like, ‘Okay, we’re going to [have him appear in Andor], and let’s make it spectacular, and let’s really make a thing out of it. And that’s what we’ve tried to do.”
The first three episodes of Andor are now streaming on Disney+. The next three episodes premiere on April 29 at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT on Disney+.
