Sam Witwer, who is set to play Maul in the upcoming Disney+ series Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord, recently offered up some of the first details regarding the show, and what fans can expect from the legendary character.
What should we expect from the Darth Maul Disney+ Show?
Speaking to Katee Sackhoff during an appearance on The Sackhoff Show, Witwer was asked about what fans can expect from the upcoming series. Witwer noted that the show won’t show a nicer side of Maul, but will showcase some of the humanity found within him.
“It’s about bad guys vs worse guys…This isn’t going to be a show where you find out Maul is a real teddy bear, man…We’re not doing that…but is he as bad as Sidious or Vader?” Witwer said (via Culture Crave). “Actually no…from the Sith perspective, this guy has flaws…[there’s] humanity that seeps in at various points…because of things that have happened to him.”
Witwer also said that the show will deal with Maul’s questioning over what the Empire has become. Specifically, the time that Maul came to power in is different from what the Empire is in modern day, and could leave Maul questioning things.
“[Maul’s] like, ‘Is that what [Sidious] had in mind? This is a little scary,'” said Witwer. “Maul comes from a time of swords, sorcery, magic and knights, and now all of that color of the universe is being sucked out of this mechanized Empire. And Maul’s like, ‘Is this right? Is this the universe we were trying to build?’”
