The Last of Us Creator Reveals How Many Seasons Are Needed to Finish Ellie’s Story

The Last of Us creator and showrunner Craig Mazin has opened up about the acclaimed HBO show’s future, ahead of the second season finale premiere this coming Sunday, May 25. Prior to working on the horror drama, Mazin previously worked with HBO on the limited series Chernobyl, which earned him two Emmy Awards including Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Limited Series.

Season 2 will be based on co-creator Neil Druckmann’s acclaimed video game sequel, The Last of Us Part II. The show stars Pedro Pascal as Joel, Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Gabriel Luna as Tommy Miller, and Rutina Wesley as Maria. The next installment has also welcomed new cast members to the acclaimed horror drama, including Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Young Manzino as Jesse, Isabela Merced as Dina, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, and Danny Ramirez as Manny, with guest star Catherine O’Hara.

The Last of Us creator on how long the series will last

During a recent interview, Mazin was asked about his plans for The Last of Us’ ending, revealing that he’s not sure if they could complete the story in the upcoming third season. That’s why, he believes that they would need a fourth season to properly wrap up Ellie’s story.

“I think there’s a decent chance that Season 3 will be longer than Season 2, just because the manner of that narrative and the opportunities it affords us are a little different,” Mazin shared. “The thing about Joel’s death is that it’s so impactful. It’s such a narrative nuclear bomb that it’s hard to wander away from it. We can’t really take a break and move off to the side and do a Bill and Frank story. I’m not sure that will necessarily be true for Season 3. I think we’ll have a little more room there. But certainly, there’s no way to complete this narrative in a third season. Hopefully, we’ll earn our keep enough to come back and finish it in a fourth. That’s the most likely outcome.”
